In another year of unprecedented challenges for all, cycling has continued to be an avenue of escape for many.
As we near the end of 2021, we saw fit to select our top highlights of the year, with everything from new bikes to tech; top road cycling moments to stand out people! So let’s dive in and see what caught our attention in 2021!
The fourth generation of the Nukeproof Mega was released in 2021 and received with overwhelming positivity.
Designed in conjunction with three-time Enduro World Series Champion, Sam Hill, the 2021 Nukeproof Mega was released as a bike capable of taking on the world’s longest and toughest race tracks, yet still providing excellent comfort and handling. The fourth generation received a substantial overhaul; offering optimised sizing/fit, improved geometry and suspension kinematics on a brand new all-carbon chassis.
In a year when life seemed to return to normal, we also saw a return of Sam Hill – we had the privilege of watching Sam race both the 2021 Mega and the new Megawatt (E-bike version of the Mega) at Innerleithen. For this reason alone we had to put the Nukeproof Mega on our highlights for 2021.
Cavendish’s Record-Equaling Tour de France
It was a great sight to see Mark Cavendish sprinting his way to a 34th stage win at the Tour de France – equaling the legend Eddy Merckx’s long standing record. Many in the cycling world wrote Cavendish off come the turn of the new year, yet he found himself returning to the kings of the sprint with Deceuninck–Quick-Step.
After being picked as a surprise choice for the team’s Tour lineup, he shocked the world by winning stage four and with it claiming the green jersey (one which I may say I loved to see back on his shoulders again). As Cavendish roared to another three stage victories – winning stage six, ten and thirteen – everything pointed to him beating Merckx’s record on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
Unfortunately it was not to be for Cavendish this year, but the feeling of a fallen champion perhaps rising again is one that grabbed the hearts of many cycling fans around the world (especially mine) in 2021.
Five Ten Trailcross GTX MTB Shoes
From one great to another we fell in love with the new FiveTen Trailcross GTX shoes. A shoe that comes highly recommended by our very own Lauren – wearing these for the past few months on trails such as the Blue Doon in Innerleithen and even hiking up local mountains.
Already a super versatile flat pedal shoe, the Trailcross received an upgrade for 2021 with the addition of the all-weather Gore-Tex protection. Designed for all types of mountain bike riding, the Trailcross GTX combines Five Ten’s sticky stealth rubber for a durable and reliable sole with EVA foam to help limit impact force.
Raising The Bar with Danny MacAskill
Danny MacAskill has made a career for himself by riding places no one else would have ever thought of going but his latest stunt grabbed all the attention in 2021. In the lead up to the the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), Danny MacAskill used his influence and following to create an impactful and powerful message.
Highlighting the need for a change to a greener future, MacAskill rode through a renewable energy factory showing off some of his incredible bike handling skills before finishing off on the top of a wind turbine! If you are yet to watch his video, grab some popcorn, get yourself comfortable and enjoy a fun thrilling, heart stopping four minutes with Danny MacAskill.

From the weird and the wonderful to the darn right bonkers, we took a trip to Scotland this year to visit the Tweedlove Bike Festival.
