A 12-speed mountain bike drive train will soon be within reach for many more riders as SRAM announces the official release of its NX Eagle groupset.
Rumours of the NX Eagle had surfaced in recent weeks after the system was spotted by eagle-eyed bike enthusiasts on pictures of forthcoming bikes, but SRAM had been silent on the subject until now.
The American manufacturer’s wallet-friendly NX drivetrain was originally released by SRAM in 2016 as a 1X11 system, but rumours have been circulating for some time that a 12-speed version would soon be released.
NX now joins SRAM’s growing group of Eagle drivetrains – which currently includes the XX1, X01, and GX – providing access to Eagle technology at a fraction of the cost of top-end components.
Indeed, the new system is expected to be cheaper than the GX groupset, which had been the entry point for 12-speed MTB systems until now.
According to SRAM, NX Eagle shares technologies with its higher-end birds of a feather, making it completely compatible within the Eagle component ecosystem – good news for Eagle riders looking to replace parts for less.
SRAM said their Eagle drivetrains are designed to work as complete systems, giving riders the ability to interchange XX1, X01, GX, or NX components as they desire.
“SRAM Eagle drivetrains are designed, engineered and manufactured to work as complete drivetrain systems. All Eagle components are designed as one, to guarantee Eagle range, durability and performance. No other company can claim its product meets our design directive,” the company said in a press statement about the new system.
According to SRAM, the NX crankset, featuring forged aluminum arms, delivers Eagle styling and performance. Designed to work with SRAM’s X-Sync 2 chainrings, it operates quietly and with the Eagle chain’s inner and outer links. The crank also features a better engineered bottom bracket and a new spindle design, which allows a more uniform approach to bottom bracket fitting, sealing, and forward and backward compatibility.
The NX Eagle rear derailleur features SRAM’s 1x-specific X-Horizon design, with a 14-tooth X-Sync 2 lower pulley for the 11- to 50- and 10- to 50-tooth cassettes. A type-3 roller bearing clutch provides quiet, consistent performance and durability, SRAM say.
The NX Eagle trigger shifter is redesigned to meet the demand of the super-wide Eagle cassette range and will be available with the Eagle-specific E-MTB option, limiting the pull lever to a single engagement.
The cassette features the huge 11- to 50-tooth Eagle range. Compatible with 8-, 9- and 10-speed splined driver bodies, the PG-1230 cassette is an integral part of the SRAM Eagle drivetrain Ecosystem.
SRAM say their NX Eagle chain is designed and manufactured using genuine Eagle architecture, making it is fully compatible with every other component in the Eagle ecosystem. The NX Eagle chain features solid pin construction, and Eagle PowerLock technology.
The NX Eagle will also feature a number of updated technologies from the Eagle range.
SRAM X-Sync 2 provides aggressive teeth design provides better chain retention for a smoother, more efficient pedal feel. With a focus on long wear-life, the X-Sync 2 Eagle design reduces friction and the accumulation of mud, grit and grime.
Zero Loss means when you push on the lever for an upshift or down shift the cable is engaged instantly, leaving no middle-ground where you’re waiting for the shift to come.
The X-Horizon rear derailleur’s ‘straight parallelogram’ design limits all movement to the horizontal axis, which makes ghost shifting impossible while also reducing shift force.
Cage Lock technology in the rear derailleur, wheel removal, and installation—as well as chain installation—becomes faster and simpler. Just push the cage forward to create slack and lock it into place.
Ultra-smooth chain inner-plates are completely devoid of square edges, resulting in a chain that engages the cassette and chainring with far less friction for quieter performance and better wear life.
Developed specifically for SRAM 1x, X-Actuation keeps shifting sharp and consistent across the entire cassette.
Roller bearing clutch
Roller bearing clutch rear derailleurs limit derailleur bounce and chain slap without sacrificing precision.
X-Glide 2 provides quick, precise, power-on shifting performance throughout the gear range, and increases chain retention on larger cogs.
