Just two years after the launch of the PZero Velo road tyres, Pirelli enters the MTB market with their first dedicated line for the trail.

Chain Reaction Cycles was among a select few invited to Sicily for the unveiling of the Scorpion range, which promises new levels of control and speed across varying terrain and conditions.

The Italian tyre specialist is among the most highly regarded tyre makers in the world. Famous for its Formula One tyres, it has been the sport’s sole supplier of advanced rubber compounds since 2010. The name ‘Scorpion’, meanwhile, is a reference to the company’s legendary motocross tyres that helped win over 70 world titles, making it one of the most successful MX tyres ever.

It’s a reputation for tyre expertise that can’t be ignored, so the Chain Reaction Cycles team jumped at the chance to head to Sicily for the unveiling, and to test the new MTB range for ourselves. We also grabbed the company’s product manager Samuele Bressan for a quick chat, which you can see in the video below.

Smart Grip technology

The Scorpion range has specific tyres for soft, mixed, and hard terrains, and just like their Formula One compounds, each is differentiated by a specific colour.

However, one key feature they all share is the SmartGRIP Compound.

It’s produced in Pirelli’s racing factories, where the engineering of their renowned F1 tyre compounds takes place. The huge testing department put the new Scorpion compound through over 30,000km of punishment, testing and stressing the tyres on all types of terrain and in different weather conditions.

Pirelli’s aim for the compound was to create a resilient tyre that would maintain its performance despite temperature or condition changes, offering grip not only on different terrains but in both wet and dry conditions.

The tyres also boast an anti-tear tread compound for puncture resistance.

Here’s a closer look at the tyres in the Scorpion range:

Scorpion H – Hard Terrain

The Scorpion H (Hard Terrain – red) is designed to perform on hard terrains, compact surfaces, and with embedded rocks. Its low profile, compact tread spacing is perfect for riding quickly and confidently over any kind of hard-packed surface, whether dry or wet.

There is also a LITE version of the Scorpion H for an even lower rolling resistance and weight, suited to cross country riders.

Scorpion M – Mixed Terrain

The Scorpion M (Mixed Terrain – yellow) is ideal for – you guessed it – mixed terrains, where changes can also be unpredictable or sudden, from hard-packs to sand, pebbles, and roots. This was the tyre we tested in Sicily (up front) and it performed well over a mix of single track and rock garden.
