Chain Reaction Cycles, Nukeproof and the Fat Tyre Flyers recently hosted the inaugural Smash it with Sam Hill day, where riders were invited to try and beat Sam’s best time on the Healesville course. Here’s the report:

What started as a Balmy 30+ degree day, turned into a perfect evening for the Victorian Downhill Series event ‘Smash it with Sam Hill’, presented by Chain Reaction Cycles, Nukeproof and, local club, The Fat Tyre Flyers. As the riders turned up in their droves, the cooler change came through and set the scene for a fun night of bikes, prizes and meeting the man himself, Sam Hill.

Over 90 keen riders turned out to ‘Smash it With Sam Hill’ in Healesville, New South Wales. The riders were invited to try and beat Sam’s best time, as part of Chain Reaction Cycle’s October events. Here is the report from the race:

What started as a Balmy 30+ degree day, turned into a perfect evening for the Victorian Downhill Series event ‘Smash it with Sam Hill’, presented by Chain Reaction Cycles, Nukeproof and, local club, The Fat Tyre Flyers. As the riders turned up in their droves, the cooler change came through and set the scene for a fun night of bikes, prizes and meeting the man himself, Sam Hill.

Sam and the Chain Reaction Cycles Crew arrived just after 5pm and the venue was buzzing. After some initial hesitation to say hello to Sam one man broke the ice having Sam sign a jersey or two for his kids. Then the cameras came out and Sam became one of the local community.

With some travelling up to 2.5 hours to come and be a part of the event, numbers surpassed the initial expectation and finished up around 80-90 riders in total. The Private Long Gully tracks were performing at their dusty, loose best, with member of the club and the owners of the property putting in significant man hours over the past months to get the venue ship shape for the event. All tracks were open to ride, so riders were spoilt for choice. With the main race track ‘Walking Chops’ adorned with bunting and timing equipment, the idea was simple, lay down your best time and see if you could beat Sam doing the same. Over the next few hours, riders did run after run with times starting to look more like the race times we are used to seeing.

The last time Sam was at Long Gully was many years ago, and didn’t end as well as he’d had a decent crash on of the hips at the bottom. Not to repeat this feat, Sam had a few interesting runs as he got used to the track but later laid down a very impressive time of 1.46.00. This would be hard to catch up, many tried. Jessie Beare, Jai Motherwell and Baxter Maiwald all put in sub 2 minute times but none could catch Sam as the sun went down on a great event.

President of the VDHS, James Tamanika, had this to say, “A big part of the partnership with Chain Reaction Cycles has been the ability to have a fun event such as this and access a legend such as Sam. We hope to maybe see Sam again at the Victorian Downhill Series this season, but obviously riders will look forward to seeing him again at State Championships, which is also one of the National Rounds.”

“I really can’t thank all who were involved enough, in particular Grant and his team from Chain Reaction Cycles, Shane, Michelle, Simone, John and Helen from Fat Tyre Flyers, Mark and Ben from Plush MTB Shuttles and the crew who get in and work on these magnificent trails, all the stores and business who supplied prizes and finally Sam Hill and all the riders who came out and made the event such a success.”
