Muc-Off is excited to launch their newest chain lube, formulated to lubricate your chain over long distances and during the harshest weather conditions. May we introduce ‘Hydrodynamic‘ – the result of a dedication to innovation by both Team Sky and Muc-Off.”

It’s a bold claim by Muc-Off so I was curious to see just how good this new Hydrodymanic lube actually is.

The first thing you notice is the swish packaging, black, sleek with a Team Sky endorsement emblazoned on the front of the bottle. Luckily or unluckily as many would have it, I live in a part of the world that is famous for its precipitation so conditions couldn’t have been better. With interchange weather forecast for the entire week I set about the process of degreasing my chain as per the instructions.

Muc-Off supply a key-ring ‘black light’ to ensure the lube has penetrated each part of the chain link; although this seems a little gimmicky it certainly does work.

I had only done a few miles before noticing a distinct difference from my previous ride, a silence had settled over my far from new drivetrain. At first I merely put this down to newly applied lube but the further I ventured into my ride the more noticeable this became.

At about 20 minutes in the heavens opened and I was treated to a downpour of biblical proportions, although it didn’t last too long I was thoroughly soaked. Generally I always use dry lubes simply because they have fewer tendencies to pick up crud than their wet counterparts so I’m used to hearing the chain moan and complain once the lube starts getting washed off. However, it seems Muc-Off Hydrodynamic is made from sterner stuff, not only did the drivetrain stay quiet thought-out the rest of the 40 mile cycle but there was a definite increase in shifting smoothness.

Not being blessed with a scientific degree I can only surmise that if the lube is maintained though-out a moderate wet ride and yet doesn’t pick up the crud a wet lube attracts this will indeed increase overall performance. Much of the overall benefit performance will of course be dependent on distance and weather conditions but I can start to see that the bold ‘27 percent more efficient than the competition’ claim may not be mere marketing hype. I do believe I have at last found my ‘go to’ lube.
