We knew it would happen eventually, and two years after Martyn Ashton’s life-changing injury, where he was left paralysed from the waist down, he’s back on a bike!
It was universally believed that the star of the Road Bike Party series would never again walk or ride a bike. But Martyn Ashton had other ideas. He has overcome incredible odds to become the first person with such injuries to ride a two-wheel mountain bike – and he simply had to film it and share with us the unique and moving experience.
His ride through the Snowdonia (UK) mountains with fellow trials legends Danny MacAskill, Chris Akrigg and Blake Samson was shot by expert filmmaker Robin Kitchin and presented by the Global Mountain Bike Network.

More about Martyn’s modified mountain bike: a Nicolai Ion 27+
Martyn’s bike was put together by the guys at Mojo Suspension. It’s a Mojo Nicolai Geometron, a collaboration that is producing bespoke custom frames to order. The major custom modification to allow Martyn to ride it was the use of a Tessier sit ski chair that was adapted to fix to a standard mountain bike seatpost in place of a regular saddle. Martyn was strapped into the chair and his feet – literally – taped to the pedals.
Suspension-wise, the bikes uses a Fox 40 downhill suspension fork and a Fox X2 rear shock. The bike was decked out in anodised blue Hope components – including cranks that were adjusted to both be forward-facing so that Martyn’s feet could be taped to the pedals.
Road Bike Party 1
The original film featuring Martyn Ashton aboard a Pinarello Dogma 2, just like the one that Bradley Wiggins rode to win the Tour de France.
Road Bike Party 2
Road Bike Party 2 sees mountain bike trials World Champion Ashton take a £15,000 carbon fibre Colnago C59 Disc road bike and push it and his riding abilities right to the edge. Before filming could be completed, however, Ashton was left paralysed following an accident during a trials demo and had to call on friends, Danny MacAskill and Chris Akrigg, to help finish the film.
Road Bike Party 3
The latest film in the series has a true party feel, and features dirt jump and slopestyle star Sam Pilgrim, aboard a Ridley Noah, bringing his own sense of style to the party, under Martyn Ashton’s tutelage and direction.
