GoPro have unveiled details of the new Hero3 Black Edition camera – a 4k cinema 12fps-capable unit that’s 30% smaller, 25% lighter and twice as powerful as previous models.

Tipping the scales at a mere 2.6 ounces, and able to capture professional cinema-quality video at twice the resolution and twice the frame-rate of previous models, the Hero3 Black Edition is set to be a huge hit with extreme sports enthusiasts. More good news for those of you who record when the light starts to go – the Hero3 Black Edition delivers double the low light performance of its much-loved predecessors – perfect for capturing trail adventures under the canopy of a dark forest!

Slow-mo fans take note: the Hero3 Black Edition has a range of capture modes including 4k at 12fps, 2.7K at 30fps, 1080p at 60fps, 1440p at 48fps, 960p at 100 fps and 720p at 120fps.

Photo performance on the new Hero3 Black Edition gets a boost too, three times faster than before and offering 12MP burst capture at a pretty mindblowing 30 frames per second. Still Photo and Time-lapse Photo modes are complemented by a new Continuous Photo mode that captures continuous 12MP stills at a steady 3, 5, or 10 photo-per-second rate, up to 30 photos at a time.

Other improvements include a redesigned audio system, improved sharpness and the addition of built-in WiFi – which can be used with the bundled waterproof, wearable WiFi remote. You can also control the new GoPro Hero3 Black Edition using the new GoPro App.

The Black version will cost £379.99 (SRP), the Silver £259.99 (SRP) [1080p30/960p48/720p60 fps; 11MP / 10 fps Burst; Wi-Fi Built-In; Wi-Fi Remote + App Compatible] and White £199.99 (SRP) [1080p30/960p30/720p60 fps; 5MP / 3 fps Burst; Wi-Fi Built-In; Wi-Fi Remote + App Compatible].
