Ireland has some of the best trails and riding locations in the world and one rider who has been instrumental in keeping the Irish scene alive has been Co. Down based Glyn O'Brien. We chat to Glyn about what lies ahead for him this year and also his involvement with the new MTB facilities in his native Northern Ireland.

CRC: Glyn you're an International MTB Superstar, Nukeproof Sponsored Rider, Fireman and now trail and pump track building pro … is there no end to your talent?

GOB: I just really enjoy anything to do with bikes. I have had a lifetime of experience travelling, racing and digging trails. I feel it’s time to put something back into the sport that has given me so much.

CRC:With the recent announcement of the CRC sponsored National Trail Centres you were quick to jump at the chance to use them for a major event – tell us about Rostrevor Mountain Bike Festival.

GOB:The idea came about around 6 months ago and we have been working hard on it since. It has never been done before on Irish soil so we figured what better way to open the new trail centre in Rostrevor than having three MTB disciplines at the one venue on the same weekend. Chain Reaction Cycles Club will be running round 2 of the IDMS, Dromara Cycling Club will be running round 2 of the Ulster XC series and Plush MTB will be running the open Enduro on Bank holiday Monday.
It’s great to see the different MTB communities working together to bring what I believe to be the biggest and best MTB event in this country. Events like this will put Rostrevor firmly on the map for MTB destinations and will boost our local economy. Massive thanks to our sponsors Chain Reaction Cycles and Newry & Mourne District Council for helping make this happen.

CRC: 2013 is a big year for mountain biking in Ireland and you’ve been mixing work and pleasure with the upcoming WPFG in a few weeks …

GOB:Yes the past year or so has been super busy for me. I have been working alongside Dafydd Davis and Co, Euroservices, Outdoor Recreation NI and to produce some of the finest trails ever to set wheels on. At the same time I have been getting ready for the launch of my company Also we are getting ready for the World Police and Fire Gameswith the DH and XC events being held at Rostrevor from 2-4th August 2013. We will learn a lot from the Festival next weekend so we can fine tune the details to produce a spectacular event that will showcase Rostrevor and Northern Ireland to the World. It’s exciting times to be a mountainbiker in this country and I am stoked to be part of it.
