CRC/Nukeproof team rider Michael Mechura took an amazing silver medal over the weekend in the 4X World Championships in Leogang, Austria, while his brother Lukas finished in sixth.
Representing the Czech Republic, among a field packed with many other Czech riders, this was one of Michael’s most impressive performances. Qualification was a rainy affair, with conditions causing more than a few problems for both bikes and riders. The weather settled a bit more for race day, although the course was still wet and muddy, providing an extra challenge and causing plenty of crashes and mechanicals.
The highly anticipated final was dominated by Swiss and Czech riders: Graf/Rinderknecht (SUI) versus Slavik/Mechura (CZE). Not only did the Czech Republic provide the most finalists, but also the biggest crowd – some 4,000 spectators cheering on from behind the crash barrier.
Team Manager Nigel Page was overwhelmed with Michael’s performance, saying: “I am so pleased for the Mechura brothers and their results at the World Championships. Lukas has ridden for the team since our first year and has had some great results over the past five years including a third place at the Fort William World Cup and was the European 4X series champion. Lukas told us how good a rider his younger brother Michael was so I thought it would be a great idea for them both to ride for the team.
Both Lukas and Michael have had a great year on the international 4X circuit and made the Czech 4X national team for the World Championships. When both Lukas and Michael made it through to the semi finals I thought they had done amazingly but it was going to be tough to make the final from gate three!
Lukas rode a great race but had a bit of bad luck crashing out battling for second, so not advancing to the main event. At the bottom of the hill he said to me his brother was going to make it! The gate dropped in semi number two and that race was one of the best 4X races I have ever seen and why 4X should still be a UCI World Cup event. 19 year old Michael battled from start to finish where he passed and beat the reigning 4X world champion Michael Prokop for a place in the elite men's final. Seeing how stoked both the brothers were on Michael making the final was worth the trip out to Austria alone.
Then in the final it was so cool to witness Michael take the silver medal in front of the huge crowd. I know how passionate both brothers are about the sport and the team. They train so hard and put the hours in so it was great to see their hard work finally pay off. Lukas' sixth place was also a fantastic result. Well done guys you are a credit to our team and mountain bike racing. I am really proud to have you guys on the team.
A World Championship elite men's silver medal is amazing for Chain Reaction Cycles and Nukeproof.”
