Just 12 months after the launch of their competition-beating Power road tyres, Michelin have released their brand new Force XC and Force AM tyres, with two more mountain bike tyres on their way later this year – the Michelin Wild AM and Michelin Jet XCR.
Michelin’s new tyres are designed to offer more grip, maximum robustness and increased confidence – allowing you to concentrate on your ride and have more fun on the trail.
We headed to the south of France to ride the new rubber and chat to the mastermind behind Michelin’s mountain bike tyre revival, Vincent Ledieu.
The introduction of Michelin’s new range signals the company’s return to the mountain bike market – drawing on the input from their sprawling R&D centre, as well as their experience and success in motorsports, Michelin are confident that their off-road tyres will be the go-to rubber for riders around the world over the next five years.
This chart gives you an idea of the type of riding each of the tyres has been designed to excel at, along with the best front/rear configurations.
Let’s take a closer look at each of the tyres, available from Chain Reaction Cycles now…
Designed for dry/hard-pack conditions and perfect for all-mountain and trail riding, the Michelin Force AM tyre uses the company’s new Trail Shield casing and Gum-X3D technology.
Trail Shield consists of a reinforced high-density cross-ply casing for extreme durability, meanwhile the GUM X3D compound, designed to offer maximum performance, traction and grip uses a Race Compound under-tread rubber which directly benefits pedal power, an outer compound which optimises traction performance, along with outstanding braking ability with no detriment to grip, plus a high level of grip on the shoulder areas for additional cornering performance.

Designed for soft/mixed terrain and aimed at cross-country riders, the Michelin Force XC uses the same Gum-X3D technology as the Michelin Force AM along with a lightweight Cross Shield casing offering exceptional performance and flexibility, combined with remarkable strength due to the use of a very high-density reinforcing ply.
