Once the preserve of long travel downhill and freeride bikes, coil shocks could be on the comeback for trail riders thanks in part to RockShox’s launch of its Super Deluxe rear shock.

Already proven on the world stage by 2016 Enduro World Series winner Cecile Ravanel (above), the Super Deluxe Coil range overcomes one of the coil shock’s weak points – it has a remote lockout option, allowing you to switch to ‘Threshold’ mode when climbing, and ‘Open’ mode for when the trail points down!

There’s no question that an air shock is always going to win in the weigh-off, but will the coil shock’s more reliable and consistent performance edge it in the rear suspension stakes? Only time will tell.
