Battling harsh weather in Belgium this morning, An Post – Chain Reaction rider Ronan McLaughlin was drafted in at the last minute, replacing team mate Sean Downey for today's season opener Beverbeek Classic.
The Donegal man battled minus temperatures and snow throughout the race to make a final break from the peleton 4km from the finish but he just couldn't catch the leading group of six riders, with the race eventually being won by Nicky Van der Lijke (Rabobank Development Team).
McLaughlin said he was happy with a top 10 performace "Today's weather was very tough, with minus temperatures and snow all day it was a hard day in the saddle. I've pleased with my result given the conditions"
Team Manager, Kurt Bogaerts say's this is a solid result to build upon throughout the season
"We had a very good performance from Ronan today in the Beverbeek Classic, especially given that he was only drafted in yesterday as Sean Downey took ill. It was a very hard race for everyone; with the wind, snow and low temperatures making it tough."
Tomorrow see's the team move on to compete in Kuurne – Brusells – Kuurne – and the forecast looks even worse!
